lWL FILM REVIEW ANAYLIS FONT

IN CLASS WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING IN DEPTH INTO THE WHITE LITTLE LIARS FILM MAGAZINE, LOOKING AND ANALYSING VARIOUS FILM MAGAZINES. WE LOOKED AT PREVIOUS MAGAZINES AND CURRENT MAGAZINES SO SOME OF THE REVIEWS MAY BE DIFFERENT TO OTHERS. CURRENTLY, I AM NOT SURE AS TO WHETHER WE WILL HAVE TO PRODUCE OUR OWN FILM REVIEW BASED ON THE OLD OR CURRENT STLYE OF THE MAGAZINE. NEVERTHERLESS, I’M SURE IT WILL BE AN ENJOYABLE TASK. TRICKY! BUT ENJOYABLE TASK.

1. WHIP IT:

AS A CLASS WE HAD EXAMINED THE FILM REVIEW FOR ‘WHIP IT’. WITH A FEMALE DOMINATING CAST, INCLUDING DREW BARRYMORE WHO ALSO DIRECTED THE FILM, I WAS INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT JOSH WINNING (REVIEWER) THOUGHT ABOUT HER TAKE ON REAL LIFE EVENTS THAT WERE BASED AROUND A ROLLERSKATING GROUP. THERE ARE MANY THINGS ABOUT THIS FILM REVIEW THAT APPEALED TO ME. I WILL BE DISCUSSING THIS BELOW…

whip it 1

LAYOUT:

WE HAD ANALYSED THE FILM REVIEW USING A PHOTOCOPY FROM THE MAGAZINE, SO IT IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TO THE ARTICLE THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS ONLINE. FIRSTLY, THE FILM IS A FUN PACKED CHICK FLICK SO I WOULD OF EXPECTED THE LAYOUT OF THE REVIEW TO MIRROR THE FUN APSECT OF THE FILM,WITH  IMAGES PLACED OVER THE ARTICLE AND THE TEXT POSITIONED IN A SLANTED FRAME. THIS HOWEVER, IS NOT THE TYPICAL FORMAT OF THEIR MAGAZINE REVIEWS. LITTLE WHITE LIES HAVE AN EDUCATED AUDIENCE SO THEY DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE THEIR FILM REVIEW APPEAR DRAMATIC WITH THE VISUALS. THE DRAMA IS WITHIN THE TEXT. THE TEXT IS DONE IN AN ORDERLY FASHION, WITH FOUR BLOCKS OF TEXTS. THERE IS A LARGE IMAGE (SCREENSHOT) FROM THE FILM PLACED RIGHT ABOVE THE TEXT. THE LAYOUT IS SIMPLE BUT NOT THE MAIN FOCUS OF THE REVIEW.

IMAGES:

WHIP IT 3

THIS IS A DIFFERENT IMAGE TO THE ONE USED IN THE ARTICLE IN THE MAGAZINE BUT I FEEL AS IF THEY BOTH REFLECT THE SAME THING: FEMALE EMPOWERMENT. I HIGHLIGHTED OR ‘ARROWED’ THE KEY FEATURES THAT I PICKED OUT FROM THE IMAGE.  WELL FIRSTLY, THE IMAGE IS PLACED AT THE TOP OF THE REVIEW ABOVE THE TEXT, MAKING IT THE FOCAL POINT FOR WHEN THE READERS FIRST GLANCE AT THE REVIEW.  WHAT THE IMAGE DOES CONVEY IS THAT THIS FILM WANTS TO GLORIFY THE DOMIANCE OF WOMEN IN THIS PATRIACHAL SOCIETY.  IN THIS SCREENSHOT, ALL YOU CAN SEE IS A CAST FULL OF FEMALE PEOPLE, IMMEDIATELY ALLOWING THE READERS TO KNOW THAT THIS FILM IS GOING TO BE BASED ON THE WOMENS SUPERIORITY. THE SCREENSHOT IS ALSO A MID SHOT. FILM REVIEW ARTICLES TEND TO USE EITHER MID SHOTS OR CLOSE UPS. CLOSE UPS ARE USED IF THE FILM REVIEW IS BASED ON ONE CHARACTER. MIDSHOTS AR USED BECAUSE IT CAN SHOWCASE SEVERAL CHARACTERS OF THE FILM WITHOUT REVEALING TOO MUCH. THE LARGE NUMBER OF FEMALE CHARACTERS IN THE FRAME ALSO REFLECTS THE UNITY OF THE INDIVIDUALS, THUS MAKING A REFERENCE TO THE SPORT ROLLERSKATING.  THE CHARACTER ON THE LEFT APPEARS TO BE A VERY DOMINATING CHARACTER; THIS IS DISPLAYED THROUGH HER BODY POSTURE. THE IMAGE IS IN COLOUR, SO IT PORTRAYS A JOYOUS ELEMENT OF THE FILM. THE LIGHTING IS HOWEVER QUITE DIM, M,AYBE TO MAKE THE FILM APPEAR MORE REALISTIC AS IT IS BASED ON TRUE EVENTS.

FONT:

WHIP IT 4

^ THE FONT OF THE TEXT IS USUALLY THE SAME ACROSS MOST OF THE FILM REVIEW ARTICLES IN THE MAGAZINE; THEY ARE SIMPLE, FORMAL, AND WELL VERY SMALL (STRESS FOR THOSE WITH POOR EYESIGHT). AGAIN, THE FONT OF THE TEXT REINFORCES THE SOPHISTICATION OF THE MAGAZINE. IF THE TEXT HAD A VERY LARGE AND INFORMAT FONT, IT WOULD ONLY DETRACT FROM THE PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW, WHICH IS TO TELL THE READERS WETHER THE FILM IS GOOD OR NOT.

RATING SYSTEM:

THE RATING SYSTEM OF LITTLE WHITLE LIES FILM REVIEWS IS DONE IN A VERY AMUSINGG MANNER. IT IS SPLIT INTO THREE PARTS: ANTICIPATION, ENJOYMENT AND RETROSPECT (ALMOST LIKE A BEGINNING, MIDDLE AND END). THE ANTICIPATION REFERS TO THEIR FEELINGS OF THE FILM PRIOR AND TO WHEN IT BEGINS. ITS WHAT THE REVIEWERS THINK THE FILM MAY BE ABOUT OR IN SOME SENSE THE AMOUNT OF PLEASURE IT WILL GIVE THEM IN WATCHING IT. ENJOYMENT OBVIOUSLY IS ENJOYMENT. WELL IF I WAS BEING SPECIFIC, IN THE ENJOYMENT SECTION, THEY MAY NOTE DOWN THEIR FAVOURITE FEATURES OF THE FILM. RETROSPECT REFERS TO THE OVERALL THOUGHTS ABOUT THE FILM, PROPOSED FOR THE AUDIENCE. THE RATINGS ALSO TEND ME QUITE TONED DOWN IN COMPARISON TO THE ACTUALL REVIEW.

WHIP IT 5

IN THE ANTICIPATION COLUMN, THE REVIEWER POINTS OUT WHAT THE FILM IS ABOUT BUT HE DOES IN A HUMOROUS MANNER. THE ENJOYMENT COLUMN WAS INFECTED BY THE ALLITERATION BUG (TRYING TO BE ENTERTAINING I GUESS). I REALLY LIKE WHAT HE WROTE IN THE RETROSPECT COLUMN. HE MADE COMMENTARY ABOUT BARRYMORE’S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT WHILST MAKING A REFERENCE TO THE FILM.

LANGUAGE:

THE BEST ABOUT THIS FILM REVIEW IN MY OPINION IS THE LANGUAGE STYLE. THE LANGUAGE APPEARS TO VERY FORMAL WITH NO COLLOQIAL WORDS EVIDENT, YET WINNING STILL MAKES IT FUN AND PLEASANT TO READ (NOT THAT SLANG IS AMUSING TO READ). THE FORMAT OF THE TEXT ALSO LINKS IN TO THE LANGUAGE STYLE. FOR EXAMPLE, IT WILL START OF WITH A BRIEF OPENING (VERY RELAXED), THEN POSSIBLY START TALKING ABOUT THE CHARACTER. THE MIDDLE USUALLY REFERS TO THE ACTUAL FILM AND MAY BE MORE DESCRIPTIVE, THUS THE LANGUAGE WILL BE EXPECTED TO BE A BIT MORE FORMAL . IN ONE OF THE OPENING SENTENCES, WINNING WRITES “IF YOU’RE FEELING REALLY SAUCY YOU COULD ALWAYS WHIP IT”. THIS SENTENCE IS PERFECT FOR THE FIRST PARAGRAPH, IT’S PLAYFUL, CHEEKY(SAME THING), AND IT REINFORCES THE FILM. WINNING THEN ALSO GOES ONTO TO MAKE A REFERENCE TO FEMALES, KNOWING THAT THEY WILL APPRECIATE HIS SENSE OF HUMOUR. WINNINGS CLEARLY KNOWS WHO IS AUDIENCE IS AND HE HAS ENGAGED THEM WITH ONE OF THE VERY FIRST LINES. HE USES RHYTHM , “PLEDGING THRILLS, SPILLS AND FRILLS” TO MAKE THE REVIEW SEEM MORE ENGAGING. AFTER A BUILD UP WITHIN THE FIRST TWO PARGRAPHS, WINNING BEGINS TO USE FACTUAL LANGUAGE TO DESCRIBE THE FILM AND IT’S HISTORY. WINNING THEN ALSO USES IMAGERY WHEN HE DESCRIBES THE CHARACTERS AS “AMAZONIAN ACTION HEROINES”. THIS ALLOWS US TO PICTURE WHAT KIND OF CHARACTERS THEY ARE. WHEN DESCRIBING THE SOUNDTRACK HE MAKES A REFERENCES TO QUITE NICHE, INIDIE MUSIC, SUBSEQUENTLY SUGGESTING THAT THAT THE READERS ALREADY HAVE PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE OF THE MUSIC. OVERALL, I FOUND THE REVIEW TO VERY FUN AND ENTICING WITH ENOUGH FACTUAL INFORMATION FOR THE READERS TO CATEGORISE IT AS A GOOD REVIEW.

2. SHANK:

WE ALSO LOOKED AT ANOTHER REVIEW WITHIN OUR SMALL GROUPS. THE FILM REVIEW ME AND MY GROUP CHOSE WAS FOR THE FILM ‘SHANK’. I HAD PREVIOUSLY HEARD OF THIS FILM AND I WAS AWARE THAT IT WAS ABOUT UNDERGROUND, LONDON, YOUTH CULTURE. I WAS INTERESTED TO  READ THE REVIEW BECAUSE I WANTED TO SEE HOW THEY COULD CRITIQUE A FILM THAT DOESN’T REALLY FIT IN WITH THEIR MAGAZINE.

shank 1

LAYOUT:

THE ARTICLE IN THE MAGAZINE WAS VERY SHORT. PERHAPS BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT TOO FOND OF THE FILM BUT WHEN I LOOKED AT DOUBLE PAGE, I HAD NOTICED THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER ARTICLES THAT REFLECTED IT’S LAYOUT. THE ARTICLE WAS ABOUT HALF THE PAGE. RATHER THAN PLACING AN IMAGE ON THE TOP OF THE ARTICLE (IN THE CENTRE), THIS REVIEW HAD THE IMAGE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. PERHAPS THEY DIDN’T WANT THE READER TO FOCUS ON THE ARTICLE AND INSTEAD STRAIGHT AWAY READ THE SHORT REVIEW AND THEIR POOR JUDGEMENT OF THE FILM. HOWEVER, ALSO ARTICLES HAD THE SAME LAYOUT, WITH THE IMAGE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, SO PERHAPS THEY WERE TRYING TO MAINTAIN A SENSE OF NEATNESS.

IMAGES:

SKANK 3

THE FIRST THING THAT I NOTICED ABOUT THIS IMAGE IS THE LOCATION; THE LOCATION IS A FILTHY, UNCIVILISED AREA. WHERE THE JUXTAPOSITION STARTED ROLLING IN ,IS THESE YOUNGSTERS SEEM AS IF THEY ARE TRYING TO BE CIVILISED.  THEY ARE ALL LAYING ON A BED, USING PLATES TO HOLD THEIR CANDLES. I ACTUALLY THOUGHT THEY WERE DRUGS. THE LIGHTING APPEARS TO BE SLIGHTLY DIM, BUT THEN THERE IS A LIGHT SHINING ONTO THEM. THIS COULD INSINUATE THEIR GOODNESS OR MORALITY. THE FILM IS ABOUT LONDON GANG CULTURE, SO IF THE TWO CHARACTERS WEARING THE HOODIES AND CAP WERE NOT PRESENT, I AND THE OTHER READERS  WOULDN’T HAVE GUESSED WHAT THE FILM WAS ABOUT. I WOULD OF THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ABOUT HOMELESS YOUNG PEOPLE.

Film poster drafts and response font

PRIOR TO MAKING A FILM POSTER, WE WERE ASSIGNED WITH THE TASK OF CREATING FILM POSTER DRAFTS. THESE FILM POSTER DRAFTS HAD TO BE IN COLOUR TO MAKE THEM APPEAR AS REALISTIC AS POSSIBLE. THEY ALSO HAD TO BE DRAWINGS, ILLUSTRATED BY OURSELVES. EACH GROUP MEMBER HAD TO PICK A DIFFERENT GENRE. THE GENRE I PICKED WAS MYSTERY. I FEEL DOING A MYSTERY POSTER WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTING, FIRSTLY BECAUSE OUR FILM IS A MYSTERY FILM ;). ALSO GENERALLY SPEAKING MYSTERY FILM POSTERS CAN BE QUITE BLAND AND SIMILAR, SO I FEEL AS IF I COULD MAKE MY MYSTERY FILM POSTER REALLY ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE TO MYSELF.

WE ALSO HAD TO CREATE A QUESTIONNAIRE, ENTAILING QUESTIONS THAT CAN MAKE YOUR AUDIENCE PICK OUT KEY FEATURES OF YOUR POSTER, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY TO PICK THEIR FAVOURITE POSTER BASED ON SUITABILITY OF YOUR CHOSEN GENRE.

RESPONSE:  BELOW IS ONE OF THE FIVE SAMPLES OF MY QUESTIONAIRES. IT WAS QUITE A CONTRADICTION BECAUSE MOST OF THE PEOPLE SAID THEY FELT AS IF THE THIRD FILM POSTER SEEMED MORE MYSTERY LIKE, BUT THEY JUST LIKED THE SECOND ONE BETTER IN GENERAL. MY TEACHER ALSO SAID IF WE COULD USE THE THIRD ONE, THE JIGSAW LINES COULD BE LIKE FRAGMENTED GLASS PIECE. I STUCK WITH MY GUT AND I AM CHOOSING THE THIRD FILM POSTER. I ORIGINALLY WANTED TO MAKE A SIMPLE POSTER, NOT BECAUSE IT’S ‘EASIER’ BUT I FEEL IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO MAKE A SIMPLISTIC POSTER IN COMPARISON TO MOLLY AND NABEELA’S FANTASY AND HORROR FILM POSTERS. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY CHOICE.

I GAVE THREE QUESTIONNARIES TO A GROUP OF 5 PEOPLE: 3 FELLOW STUDENTS AND TWO MEMBERS OF THE STAFF. ALL FIVE MEMBERS FIT INTO MY AGE CATEGORY OF 15- 30, SO IT MADE SENSE TO GATHER PEOPLE OF THIS DEMOGRAPHIC. I HAD A SLIGHTLY MIXED RESPONSE WHICH WAS CRUCIAL TO ME, AS IT MADE ME REALISE THAT DESPITE BEING IN THE SAME DEMOGRAPHIC, THEIR PREFERENCES ARE NOT THE SAME, THUS I HAD TO BECOME ADAPTABLE.  THEY WERE ALSO WERE FROM DIFFERENT ETHNIC ORIGINS WHICH PROVIDES MORE VARIETY IN MY RESULTS

photoshop training title

SO THE FAMOUS PHOTSHOP, WHAT IS IT?…  AN IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE THAT ALLOWS USERS TO MANIPULATE, CROP, RESIZE, AND CORRECT COLOUR ON DIGITAL PHOTOS. I HAVE HAD SMALL PRACTICE WITH PHOTOSHOP PREVIOUSLY, BUT I WAS NEVER WELL EQUIPED WITH IT’S TOOLS AND FUNCTIONS. INTERESTINGLY, I HAVE GROWN TO LIKE PHOTOSHOP AND I DEFINITELY HAVE LEARNED TO USE MAY OF IT’S TOOLS.

WHAT I AND MANY OTHERS HAD STRUGGLE WITH WHEN USING PHOTOSHOP WAS WORKING OUT HOW TO USE THE LAYERS. I OBVIOUSLY GOOGLED PHOTOSHOP BEGINNER’S GUIDE AND CAME ACROSS A MINOR ONLINE BEGINNERS GUIDE TO PHOTOSHOP. ON THAT I CAME ACROSS THIS…

LAYERS

^ WHAT I HAVE LEARNT IS THAT PHOTOSHOP IS AN A SENSE, NOT A MULTI-TASKER. BY THIS I MEAN, WORKING WITH LAYERS. LAYERS CAN EQUAL TO THE BACKGROUND, IMAGES YOU HAVE OPENED UP, TITLES ETC. THERE IS A SMALL EYE ICON BESIDES EACH LAYER TAB. IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE ONE LAYER BY ITSELF, YOU HAVE TO ONLY THE EYE ICON OPEN FOR THAT LAYER. ALSO IF YOU WANT TO MAKE AMENDS TO THE BACKGROUND FOR EXAMPLE, YOU HAVE TO CLICK ON THAT EXACT LAYER TAB.

I OBVIOUSLY MADE A LOT OF ERRORS WHEN PRACTICING WITH PHOTOSHOP SO TO GET RID OF YOUR ERRORS, YOU CAN CLICK ‘STEP BACKWARDS’ AND VICE VERSA, ‘STEP FORWARDS’. ADDITIONALY, YOU CAN GO ONTO WINDOWS AND CLICK ONTO ‘HISTORY’, WHERE A SMALL BOX WILL APPEAR SHOWING YOU ALL YOU HAVE ALL DONE SINCE YOU OPENED PHOTSHOP. IT HAS A LITTLE TRASH CAN TO GET RID OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. I FOUND THIS PARTICUALRLY USEFUL AS ‘STEP BACKWARDS’ DIDN’T ALWAYS WORK AND WITH THE HISTORY BOX, I CAN DELETE THE SMALLEST MISTAKES

^ I ALSO WATCHED A CHEEKY PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL!

PRACTICING CREATING A FILM POSTER:

WE WERE ALSO ASSIGNED WITH THE TASK OF CREATING A PRACTICE FILM POSTER (NOT A DRAFT). BELOW ARE MY STEPS, IN WHICH I INSTRUCT YOU HOW I MADE IT (NOT A RECIPE)

PT 1

1. FIRSTLY I HAD TO OPEN A NEW PAGE IN PHOTOSHOP MAKING THE MEASUREMENTS WERE CORRECT (A40). I ALSO HAD TO USE THE ‘INTERNATIONAL PAPER’ FORMAT.

PT 2

2. I THEN WENT ON GOOGLE IMAGES TO SEARCH FOR A LIGHT GREY BACKROUND, AS THIS FILM POSTER WAS BASED ON A SCI-FI FILM. ONCE I SAVED THE IMAGE, I OPENED IT UP IN PHOTOSHOP. IT CREATED A NEW TAB/ LAYER. I HAD TO DUPLICATE THE LAYER TO THE ‘FILM TRAINING POSTER’ LAYER WHICH WAS BLACK CANVAS. ONCE IT WAS ON IT WAS TOO SMALL, SO I HAD TO ENLARGE IT TO MAKE IT FIT USING THE TRANSFORM TOOL, WHILST HOLDING THE SHIFT TO PREVENT IT FROM DISTORTING.

PT 3

3. I THEN WENT ONTO GOOGLE IMAGES AND SEARCHED FOR AN IMAGE OF A ROBOT. ONCE I FOUND THE ONE I LIKED AND I SAVE IT, I OPENED IT UP IN PHOTOSHOP AS A NEW LAYER.

PT 4

4. NEXT I HAD TO CUT AROUND THE IMAGE TO GET RID OF THE GREY BACKGROUND. ONCE I HAD ACCOMPLISHED THIS, I ATTEMPTED TO DUPLICATE THE LAYER AND PLACE THE ROBOT ONTO THE ‘FILM TRAINING POSTER’. BIG MISTAKE! (THE USE OF CAPITALS IN EACH SENTENCE PREVENTS THESE WORDS SOUNDING DRAMATIC 😦  ). SO WHAT I HAD ACCROSS WAS THE ROBOT WITH A WHITE BACKGROUND. I WAS CONFUSED AS TO WHY THE WHITE BACKGORUND WAS THERE. WHAT I HAD TO DO WAS GO ONTO THE ‘ROBOT’ LAYER AND GET RID OF THE BACKGGROUND AS A WHOLE. ONCE I HAD ACCOMPLISHED THIS, I WAS ABLE TO PLACE THE ROBOT ON ITS OWN, ON THE ‘FILM TRAINING POSTER’. I HAD TO AGAIN TRANSFROM THE SIZE AND CENTER IT TO WHERE I WANTED.

 PT 6

5. I ONLY ADDED THE TITLES AND A TAGLINE BECAUSE I WANTED TO KEEP THE FILM POSTER VERY SIMPLE, SIMILARLY TO HOW I IMAGINE MINE TO BE.

FINAL RESULT:

pt 7

I ALSO MADE THE BACKGROUND LIGHTER USING CONTRAST. FINITO!

poster research

IMPORTANCE:

CONVENTIONS:

THE CONVENTIONS OF A FILM POSTER HELPS TO INFORM US ABOUT THE TYPICAL FEATURES THAT CAN BE FOUND AMONGST GENERAL FILM POSTERS. IT ASSISTS IN MAKING THE PUBLIC FAMILIARISED WITH THE CONCEPT OF FILM POSTERS AND THE VARIOUS FILM POSTERS THAT CAN BE FOUND IN THE MEDIA MARKET.

blockbuster poster conventions

^ ABOVE ARE THE TYPICAL CONVENTIONS OF A HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER FILM. USING THE ‘IN TIME’ FILM POSTER, I HAVE APPOINTED WHAT TYPICAL FEATURES WOULD BE EXPECTED TO BE FOUND IN THIS TPYE OF FILM.

short film conventions

^ ABOVE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A SHORT FILM POSTER. AS YOU CAN TELL, THERE ARE LESS CONVENTIONS IN COMPARISON TO A BLOCKBUSTER FILM POSTER. THIS IS BECAUSE THE MAJOR BLOCKBUSTER FILMS AIM TO BE DRAMATIC AND ‘IN YOUR FACE’ WHILST SHORT FILM POSTERS ENTICE THE AUDIENCE THROUGH ITS SIMPLICITY. WHAT I ALSO HAVE NOTICED IS THAT SHORT FILMS ARE EITHER VERY MUTED IN COLOUR OR THEY STICK TO A SIMPLE TWO COLOUR SCHEME.

REASONS:

TITLE: THE TITLE INITIAL PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE THE AUDIENCE WITH THE BASIC FORMAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FILM: THE NAME. THE TITLE CAN BE ESSENTIAL IN THE FACT THAT IT HITNS SOME ASPECTS OF THE FILM’S NARRATIVE WITHOUT REVEALING TOO MUCH. ALSO IF THE FILM HAS A MEMORABLE OR ‘CHEEKY’ NAME, THE PUBLIC ARE MORE LIKELY TO REMEMBER THE FILM IF THEY COME ACCROSS IT IN A CINEMA.

CHARACTERS: THE CHARACTERS OF A FILM ARE AN ESSENTIAL CONTRIBUTION TO A FILM POSTER. ESPECIALLY IN SUPERHERO FILMS, CHILDREN WILL BE ATTRACTED TO THE POSTER IF THEY SEE A MASSIVE SUPERHERO PLACED IN THE CENTER OF THE POSTER, TO IMMEDIATELY GRAB YOUR ATTENTION. THEY MAY ALSO BE ENLARGED IN COMPARISON TO THE CHARACTERS BEHIND, AS THE MAIN SUPERHERO IS WHAT THE AUDIENCE CARE ABOUT. ALSO THE AUDIENCE MAY BE MORE DRAWN TO A FILM POSTER, IF THERE IS AN IMAGE OF A WELL KNOWN AND LIKED POSTER ON IT, ESPECIALLY IF THE ACTOR IS ATTRACTIVE.

LOCATION: NOT ALL FILM POSTERS SHOWCASE ASPECTS OF THE LOCATION. IN THE CASES THEY DO, IT IS TO IMMERSE THE AUDIENCE INTO THE FILM. ESPECIALLY IN FANTASY FILMS, THE AUDIENCE WOULD WANT TO BE TAKEN INTO ANOTHER WORLD; A FICTIONAL WORLD. THE LOCATION CAN ALSO PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT INTO THE NARRATIVE OF THE FILM.

TAGLINES: TAGLINES ARE SHORT, SIMPLE AND MOSTLY EFFECTIVE. THEY ESSENTIALY REVEAL WHAT THE FILM MAY BE ABOUT. FOR EXAMPLE, THE TAGLINE IN ‘IN TIME’ IS ‘TOMORROW IS A LUXURY YOU CAN’T AFFORD’. THIS INSINUATES TO ME THAT YOU HAVE TO LIVE EVERY DAY IS YOUR LAST, THUS SUGGESTING THE FILM IS OF AN ACTION OR THRILLER GENRE.

CREDIT BLOCK: CREDIT BLOCKS ARE A FACTUAL, DESCRIPTIVE PIECE OF INFORMATION WHICH ARE USED TO STATE THE FACTS AND GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE. THOSE INTERESTED IN THE INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXT CAN SQUINT THEIR EYES AND CONDUCT SOME RESEARCH.

looking for eric poster

AS PART OF MARKET RESEARCH, WE LOOKED AT THE FILM EXAMPLE, ‘LOOKING FOR ERIC’. DESPITE HEARING ABOUT IT, NONE OF US ACTUALLY KNEW MUCH ABOUT IT. IT WAS AN INTERESTING TASK TO TRY AND GUESS THE GENRE OF THE FILM BASED ON PHOTOS FROM THE FILM AND THE VARIOUS FILM POSTERS. THIS PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE, HOW I NEED TO CAREFULLY LOOK INTO MY GENRE AND THE AUDIENCE I AM AIMING AT, FOR WHEN I CREATE MY POSTER.

WE ALSO FOUND THAT FILM POSTERS MAY FOLLOW A SWOT CRITERIA. SWOT (STRENTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS). THIS AGAIN IS SOMETHING I WILL NEED TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN CREATING MY FILM POSTER. LISTED BELOW ARE EXAMPLES OF SWOT, WE FOUND WHILST ANALYSING THE FILM POSTER…

S-   THE ‘BRITISHNESS’ OF THE FILM (BRITISH HUMOUR). THIS WAS A STRENTH AS IT CAN CULTURALLY INTEGRATE PEOPLE AND MANY MEMBERS OF THE AUDIENCE MAY APPRECIATE BEING ABLE TO FAMILIARISE WITH THE CULTURAL ASPECTS OF THE FILM. THE PEDIGREE OF DIRECTOR (KEN LOACH). KEN LOACH IS RENOWNED FOR MAKING INFAMOUS, HARD HITTING, BRITISH FILMS, SO AN AUDIENCE CAN BE GUARANTEED?

W-  A WEAKNESS OF THE FILM IS THAT IT COULD BE TOO GRITTY AND IN TERMS OF RELEASE DATES, MOODS, WEATHER, AUDIENCE MEMBERS MAY NOT CHOOSE TO VIEW THE FILM  IF THEY FEEL THE LACK OF GLAMOUR WOULD BE UNAPPEALING.  SOME MAY ARGUE THAT IT MAY RESEMBLE A DOCUMENTARY AND MAY NOT WISH TO PAY TO SEE THE FILM BECAUSE OF THIS. OTHERS MAY ALSO CLAIM THAT IT COULD SHED BAD LIGHT INTO THE BRITISH CULTURE. ANOTHER WEAKNESS IS THAT IT WILL PROBABLY NOT BE APPEALING TO WOMEN. THE FILM IS REVOLVED AROUND A MAJORITY OF MALE CHARACTERS, THE IDEA OF WORKING CLASS BRITISH MALE CULTURE IS PORTRAYED IN THE FILM, SO THIS CERTAINLY MAY NOT ATTRACT WOMEN INTO WATCHING IT. ALSO, THIS COULD AFFECT SALES IMMENSELY.

OPPORTUNITES-   THE FACT THAT ERIC CANTONA ACTS IN THIS FILM COULD MEAN THAT FILM WOULD BE VERY SUCCESSFUL. HE IS A FAMOUS EX MANCHESTER UNITED FOOTBALLER SO THIS FILM COULD ATTRACT A TERTIARY AUDIENCE, ESPEICALLY AS THE FILM WAS SHOWCASED IN A PRESTIGIOUS EVENT SUCH AS THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL.

THREATS- THREATS ALSO HAVE TO VASTLY BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. ONE MAJOR FACTOR IS THAT THE FILM COULD BE TOO ASSOCIATED WITH FOOTBALL. THEY MAY DISREGARD OTHER FOOTBALL TEAMS AND HUMILIATE NON MANCHESTER UNITED FILMS IN THAT SENSE. PEOPLE MAY ALSO NOT BE FANS OF ERIC CANTANA IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT WAS FAMOUSLY REPORTED THAT HE KUNG- FU KICKED A SUPPORTER IN THE MOUTH, IN 1995. THERE COULD ALSO BE COMPETITION FROM HOLLYWOOD FILMS SUCH AS ‘TERMINATION SALVATION’ AND ‘MY SISTER’S KEEPER’ , WHICH WOULD CERTAINLY NOT HAVE A NICHE AUDIENCE.
